What Structure Of Hardware Parts Can Be More Cost-saving By Powder Metallurgy Processing?

Jun 22, 2021

Compared with the parts produced by other processes, powder metallurgy parts have obvious advantages in cost-saving in the case of mass production. However, because the powder metallurgy process has certain requirements for the structure of the product, not all powder metallurgy parts have this advantage, so what kind of powder metallurgy parts can save costs more?

1. Powder metallurgy gears: All gears with tooth profile belong to this category.

2. Powder metallurgy oil bearing: tubular type, but the size is not suitable for too long

3. Special-shaped structural parts: Parts with through holes in the pressing direction, the holes are all formed by mandrels. The most economical powder metallurgy parts have the same dimensions in the pressing direction, as shown in the following figure:

For some powder metallurgy parts with multiple tables, each table of the part is formed by independent upper and lower die punches. In order to make the density of multiple table parts uniform, the number of pressing actions of the die punch should be equal to the number of parts forming table If the mold is complicated or expensive to make, in order to reduce mold manufacturing costs and avoid problems that affect the quality of formed parts, the number of directly formed parts can be reduced, and the remaining tables can be processed on the formed/sintered parts by cutting. As shown below:

There are 4 table tops in the pressing direction. Due to the limitation of the number of press actions, two of the table tops are cut. Therefore, in order to meet the needs of powder metallurgy compression molding, it is recommended to reduce the number of steps, and the other two steps will be processed after sintering.

To sum up, after the mold is formed, the metal parts with little or no cutting can be processed by powder metallurgy to save costs.
